St Mary’s Junior Church
St. Mary’s Junior Church caters for children between the ages of three to around seven or eight. We meet weekly during term time at 9.30am each Sunday. The children usually arrive between 9.15am and 9.25am so that their parents or carers can drop them off on their way to the 9.30am Eucharist service.
We meet in St. Mary’s Parish Hall (opposite the Church) except on the first Sunday of the month when we meet in the Church for the All Age Service.
We enjoy activities such as cutting, sticking, painting, colouring, sewing, singing, dancing and playing games.
We meet to share the good news of the gospel, to explore our lives as Christians and to learn Bible stories, prayers and songs. The emphasis is on learning through play, having fun and sharing fellowship. Children come when they can. We are always pleased to see them whether they come every week or a few times a year.
We use resources linked to the same readings used that Sunday in Church. This is important because it means that if their parents and carers have been to Church they can share their experiences afterwards.
Each week we do a mini Show and Tell session in the Church so the congregation can learn from the children. Their work either goes home with them or forms displays in the Church for everyone to enjoy.
Each year we practise very hard and put on a Nativity Play as a part of our Christmas Eve Christingle Service.
Once a month we have an All-Age Service when the Junior Church, St. Mary’s Angels, Wednesday and Friday Brownies, and our Guides take it in turns to read the lessons, lead prayers and put on tea and coffee afterwards, often in aid of charities chosen by the children themselves.
