 8th May, 1945
Victory in Europe Day (VE Day)
marked the end of
World War 2 in Europe,
and the long and arduous  process of the
political, economic, and physical reconstruction
of the continent began.

In June 1945,
fifty countries signed the United Nations Charter, and

pledged to maintain international peace and security.

Millions of refugees and displaced persons,
whose lives had been violently uprooted by the war,
now faced an uphill  struggle  for
recovery and repatriation.

VE Day poster

‘They will beat their swords into ploughshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks.

Nation will not take up sword against nation,
neither will they train for war any more’.

( Isaiah 2,v, 4 )
