‘ Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
Turn away from sin, and be faithful to Christ’.
These words are spoken by the priest in Ash Wednesday services as s/he marks the sign of the cross in ashes on the foreheads of members of the congregation.
Sackcloth and ashes are traditionally symbols of repentance for past sins.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the penitential season of Lent
when we remember the forty days and forty nights
when Jesus fasted in the wilderness,
‘ being tempted by the devil.’
